Giving access to education=giving hope and choices for the future!
Maria is one of 5 siblings. Her parents work in the fields in Mexico, and did not have the opportunity to receive an education past elementary school. Her parents wanted her and her siblings to go to school, but they live too far away to get to a public school, and there is no transportation. So Maria and her siblings were on track to grow up with very limited choices for their future.
But in the summer of 2019, her life changed when someone came to their door. These people shared with her father that a new school was opening specifically for children of field workers. The school is free and provides transportation.The school is also designed to help students begin their formal education at any age. Maria, age 8, was listening in the other room, hoping her father would say yes. He did, and Maria and her two sisters all started school for the first time at ages 5,8,and 11. None of them could even write their name, but the teachers worked with them and the other students and they learned quickly!
After 4 years, Maria advanced to her grade level. She hopes to go on to finish her education, be the first in her family to graduate from high school, attend college and become a teacher!
